Mullumbimby pool campaign heats up
COMMUNITY support for a plan to heat the Mullumbimby swimming pool continues to grow.
The Friends for Heating Mullum Pool Inc (FFHMP), which has been meeting regularly since launching the proposal earlier this year, says it is driven by the fact that the Byron Shire has no decent-sized heated pool.
The group has begun to explore options for large-scale grant funding and corporate sponsorship to cover the estimated $600,000 cost of heating the pool.
That includes the installation of solar panels and associated water heating and pumping equipment. This would allow the pool to be open with comfortable swimming temperatures all year round.
The group is planning a swimathon in November to raise community awareness of environmental sustainability, with displays showing how the new solar PV electricity generation and solar water heat pump systems would work.
It says schools, community groups, health groups and families will all benefit from the extra months of swimming, to say nothing of the sturdy “100 Club” members like 60-plus Vic Carpenter, who swam more than 500km last season, and John Dallihou, who did more than 400km. The group says that with marketing, the Mullumbimby pool could become a much bigger enterprise for the community.
Community support for the project is on the increase and the FFHMP has thanked thank Richard Storie from Dennett’s IGA supermarket for his generous donation and encouragement for the project.
The group also thanked the Byron Bay Winter Whales for their support.
