Mullum pool’s inflatable gets the young jumping

Squeals of laughter and a steady buzz of happy kid sounds greet the ears every Friday night along a normally lifeless stretch of Jubilee Avenue in Mullumbimby, as the young and young at heart flock to the pool for all the fun of the inflatable.
This season Mullumbimby pool has been the place to be on Friday nights, ever since manager owner Mark Mathison introduced evening opening with the giant inflatable to jump, slide and clamber over, preferably while being squirted with a hose.
The idea was suggested by staff member Natalie Williams, who had been impressed with its popularity in her previous work place.
It’s not unusual to have 150 kids present, ranging in ages from four or five to teenagers and adults, and the queue for a turn is always long.
“Natalie came up with the idea of a time trial,” said Mark, “and some kids just got faster and faster, and tried harder and harder.”
But whether or not kids want to compete, it’s a great place to come for healthy, happy fun in a safe environment.
“It’s carefully controlled and supervised,” explained Mark, “and we’ve never had any injuries.”
Last Friday night was time trials night, and Mark was thrilled with the support of local businesses in donating cash prizes.
“Everyone said, ‘I’d love to help you guys out’, and in no time we had $2000 in cash to give away in prize money,” he said.
The pool will continue to be open on Friday evenings while the weather remains warm.
