MP says Fair Go for the regions campaign is important

THIS week marks one month since the beginning of our push for a Fair Go for the regions and it seems the message is starting to get through.

In town yesterday to meet with Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett, Dr Christian Rowan threw his full support behind the joint ARM-News Corp campaign.

"A Fair Go for the regions is very important given that the people who live in rural and regional Queensland pay their fair share of taxes and they are absolutely entitled to a local investment in areas such as health and education because of what that means to maintaining health and well-being as well as providing the opportunity for employment and economic growth," he said.

The former president of the Rural Doctors Association has lived and worked in rural communities and knows the pressures we face.

"I have a very deep appreciation of what service delivery means for people who don't live in the south-east corner," he said.

"The notion of the Fair Go resonates with me because of my background and experiences.

"It's the fair and reasonable thing to do to invest in our regions."

It was his first meeting in his new role as Shadow Minister for the Environment and Heritage Protection and National Parks and The Great Barrier Reef and first on the agenda was discussions about environmental protection in the area.

Protecting turtles and other marine life from pollution, eliminating agricultural run-off and challenges facing the reef are some of the issues he plans to tackle.

Dr Rowan's may be a face that locals become familiar with as he fulfills his new duties. Both his dad and sister live in the area and he tries to visit when he can.
