Moves to close highway access

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is moving towards closing dangerous access points to the Pacific Highway from Woodford Lane at Ewingsdale.

Byron Council has been in talks with the RTA about closing off the access points following the deaths of three young men last month after their car, which was attempting to cross the highway from Woodford Lane, was hit by a truck.

The council’s executive manager of community infrastructure, Phil Holloway, told last week’s council meeting the council wanted the access points closed.

Mr Holloway said the council wanted them closed for the safety of drivers and the RTA ‘are moving towards that’.

Woodford Lane – the old Pacific Highway – is used by drivers as a ‘short cut’ to get to and from Byron Bay.
