Mixed bag for Bay cricketers

Byron Bay

Another century to Steve Groves, and three players taking at least six wickets apiece, were the highlights of last Saturday’s efforts by the Byron Bay Cricket Club.

The club’s first graders took on South Tweed and the news isn’t good.

The Bay were all out for 79 after 24 overs. South Tweed then knocked up 8- 45 off 25 overs and declared to send the Bay back in.

In the second dig the Bay are 4-44 off 14 overs at the end of day one in the match. Players will have to really apply themselves next Saturday to get a result.

Short Stats: South Tweed 8 declared for 185 (D Lynch 34, M Shean 33, J Walle 22, L Swanson 17, P Dhillon 12 n.o., Jake Lewis 2-24, Matt Irwin 2-27, Ian Callan 2-32, Mike Clements 1-7, Ryan de Chateau 1-16) v Brunswick-Byron Bay 1st Innings 79 (Ian Callan 28 n.o., Reid Campbell 18, Dave Thomson 12, J Walle 5-36, J Boote 5-40) and 2nd Innings 4-44 (Reid Campbell 15, Dave Thomsom 15, Vince Quigley 9 n.o., Jake Lewis 2 n.o., D Hawkins 3-25) at South Tweed.

Second Grade are at home in a two-day game against Ballina Bears. Bears were bowled out for 186 and in reply, the Bay are 0-29.

Mitch went off with the ball, taking 6-51 off 22 overs, and captain Anthony took six catches as wicketkeeper as well as removing the bails for a run-out off Brad Jones’s arm.

This match is still in the balance and the team will be treating next Saturday as the start of the innings as they chase down their total.

The Byron Bay Handimart Fourth Grade had a win in their one-day game v Mullum-Bruns at Lofts Oval, Bruns.

The home side scored 166 off 29 overs, with Grovesy having a great match, effecting one direct hit run-out, an infield catch, a caught and bowled to finish with figures of six for 16 for the fielding part of the match.

He then came out and scored his second unbeaten century in two games, amassing 109 not out in a winning total of 5-170.
