THE Islamic State (IS) group has released a video purporting to show militants beheading 21 Egyptian Christians kidnapped in Libya.
Egypt's state news agency MENA quoted the spokesman for the Coptic Church as confirming the hostages believed to be held by IS militants were dead.
Relatives of the Coptic workers, reportedly kidnapped by the Ansar al-Sharia militia in January, had urged the Egyptian government to help secure their release.
In the southerly Minya Governorate, relatives screamed and fainted upon hearing news of the deaths.
The five-minute video showed the handcuffed Coptic hostages in orange jumpsuits being beheaded by their black-suited captors on a beach of the Libyan capital.
