GUITAR Hero marathons, big beards and backyard cricket games - September is all about men going blue in their own little way to support fellow Aussie blokes affected by cancer.
It's super easy for all Queensland men to say I Can Go Blue for Cancer during September. It means doing what you do best to raise funds and awareness, while encouraging your mates to reduce their personal risk of cancer too.
Some men swap snags for skinless chicken on the barbie, others go alcohol-free or offer to do the housework for a week - and many more grow mo's or shave beards they've been growing for years - all for a good cause!
At CCQ, we know up to one-third of all cancers are preventable through simple lifestyle changes like eating healthy, quitting smoking, being SunSmart, moving more, maintaining a healthy weight and reducing alcohol intake.
By going blue and making a small lifestyle change this month, you can help reduce your risk of cancer and help us toward a cancer free future at the same time.
So, bro, what will you do to go blue?
Ditch the daily soft drink, take regular SunSmart power walks around the block, tuck into a few more fruits & veggies or book in a visit to the doc to chat about cancer screening.
If you're due for a shave or your partner's pestering about unruly hair - consider clipping for cancer - raise funds by registering your event at icanforcancer.org.au.
One in two Queensland men will develop cancer in their lifetime.
Each year across our state, more than 3000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, over 1800 with melanoma, more than 1500 with bowel cancer, and 1300 with lung cancer - and that's just the top four male cancers.
