Mackay mayor fires up over CEO sacking
MACKAY Regional Council Mayor has fronted media regarding the firing of former chief executive officer Brett Heyward, and said there was "no secrecy" in the issue, she's "simply not able to say".
She refused to comment on the cost of hiring and firing Mr Heyward, citing questions about it "foolish" and was confident of appointing a new CEO in coming weeks.
"Are you going to say how much it cost yet, this whole process? This is ratepayer money," Daily Mercury reporter Emily Smith asked.
"You're asking me to answer your question, I have to then talk about things that I have no right to talk about. You're assuming. You think through what you've just said to me. And you will see the foolishness in your question," Mayor Deirdre Comerford said.
"Council's got a wonderful selection of shortlisted candidates that appeared through the selection process, so we've got shortlisted candidates, we simply went to the next shortlisted candidate like every other employer would do," Cr Comerford said.
"Aren't we lucky that such a talented individual would want to come here amidst all the media coverage that's occurring at the moment.
Should we hold off until the local Government elections in March to appoint a new CEO for Mackay Regional Council?
This poll ended on 10 November 2015.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
"Because if they believed everything in the media they could very well be turned off and our reputation could be damaged.
"But fortunately this council has a reputation for being efficient, for being innovative and for being passionate. And we've won heaps of awards that show that.
"So I'm grateful there are people out there who see through everything."
She told media to head to the council meeting on Wednesday for more information on the topic.
Meanwhile Mayor Deirdre Comerford said she will be seeking re-election as Mayor of Mackay Regional Council at the 2016 Local Government Election.
