THE Surf Life Saving community has paused today to remember Matthew Barclay on the one year anniversary of his death.

The 14-year-old lost his life on March 28, 2012 while competing at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast.

He's been remembered in so many ways in the past 12 months.

• More than 1300 mourners gathered at Our Lady of the Rosary church at Caloundra for his funeral
• A custom-made timber seat and plaque have been installed next to the Maroochydore
• Family and friends held a memorial walk on Maroochydore Beach on what would have been his 15th birthday
• His club mate Rhys Burrows organised a custom-made Berg surfboard decorated with Matt's images.

Maroochydore SLSC captain Clive Herrald said Matt was still a big part of the club.

"We have a new surf boat called the 'Matty B' and his parents are still very much involved in the club," he said.

Mr Herrald said everyone had handled Matt's passing differently.

"Some people still do talk about him and some don't," he said.

"It's something they won't ever forget... everyone handles it differently.

"There will be a lot of people who will look at the Aussies coming up and be swimming for Matty."

One of Matt's club mates, who asked not to be named, said everyone was remembering him in their own way.

"I think it will mostly hit home in three weeks when we're all racing at the Australian Championships," he said.

"We'll all be thinking about it and how he should be there and what happened last year.

"It has been so different racing at all the carnivals and not having him around, also not having him at training."
