Oscar hope: Robbie earns nomination for Academy Awards
ACTRESS Margot Robbie will be Australia's great hope at this year's Academy Awards after earning her first Oscar nomination overnight.
The talented Robbie earned a best actress nomination for her portrayal of infamous US figure skater Tonya Harding in the dark comedy I, Tonya.
However, the Queenslander faces some stiff competition with big guns Meryl Streep (The Post) and Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) also vying for the famous golden statue.
Robbie could have been up for a second Oscar nod but I, Tonya, for which she was listed as a producer, controversially missed out on best movie.
However, Robbie won't be the only Australian in with a shot of glory with editor Lee Smith receiving a nomination for his work on World War II film Dunkirk.
The Oscars will be handed out on March 4 in Hollywood.
