Is this region really among the happiest in Australia?

THE Maranoa has ranked in the top five happiest federal electorates in the country.

All 150 electorates were ranked as part of the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index survey published today.

The survey assesses life satisfaction, finding rural electorates dominate the top of the wellbeing league table, while big city suburbs bring up the rear.

A personal wellbeing score out of 100 is recorded, with the national mean of 75.37.

Maranoa had a score of 78.82 to hold fifth place.

The Maranoa is the largest federal electorate in Queensland and takes areas including in Southern Downs, Western Downs, Goondiwindi, Balonne, Winton, Quilpie and Longreach as well as areas of the Toowoomba Regional Council.

Groom rated about halfway down the list, ranked at number 61 with a 76.03 rating.

Wright ranked closer to the bottom of the pile of the wellbeing index with a ranking of 121 with a score of 74.47.

Deakin University senior research fellow Delyse Hutchinson said the wellbeing divide between suburban and rural Australia was "perhaps linked to aspiration within urban areas and some frustration at not having the resources to meet that aspiration".

The findings are gathered from more than 24,000 responses to the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index over the past 10 years.

The index is a joint project of Australian Unity and Deakin University.

It measured satisfaction with life across a range of areas including standard of living, health, achievement, personal relationships, safety, community connection and future security.
