Man accused of threatening 20 campers with knife, bow
AT LEAST 20 people, including children, had to be protected after a man allegedly threatened them with a large cane knife and a compound bow and arrow at a campsite west of Kyogle.
Campers at the Bells By Camping Ground were approached and threatened by a 35-year Queensland man, who was wielding a knife and archery weapons, at about 7.30 pm on Saturday.
He disappeared into the bush before police arrived, allowing the campers to be moved to a safe location.
The alleged offender was apprehended a short time later at a nearby campsite without further incident.
He was arrested and taken to Lismore Base Hospital for a mental health assessment, Lismore Police Inspector Susie Johnston said.
"We were very pleased the incident was resolved so quickly and without any injuries," she said.
An extended manhunt in the dark would have been difficult, she said.
