Man took explicit photos of his six-year-old sister

A 22-YEAR-OLD man has been sent to prison after he took explicit photos of his six-year-old sister and distributed them on the internet.

At Ipswich District Court, the man - who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child - pleaded guilty to several child pornography offences.

Crown prosecutor Jessica Goldie said the then 20-year-old had taken pornographic photos of both his sister and his four-year-old female cousin in 2012.

The photos featured close up shots of the girls' groin area, which the man uploaded and circulated on the internet.

The pictures were believed to have been taken while the man stayed at his mother's house in Eureka, south-west of Bundaberg, between December 1, 2012 and March 1, 2013.

He was arrested at an East Ipswich address on February 28, 2013, and found in possession of various child pornography material.

Defence barrister Geoff Seaholme said the man, a forklift driver for a concrete company, was a shy and socially-withdrawn person.

A psychological report revealed he had endured a deprived and isolated childhood which had left him emotionally detached.

The report also indicated the man was at moderate risk of reoffending if he found himself in similar circumstances.

Despite the nature of the man's crime, Mr Seaholme said his client still had the support of his mother, who was present in court.

Judge Sarah Bradley said adults who took advantage of children in a sexual way or accessed child pornography should expect to go to jail.

"Even though this is your first criminal conviction, I have no choice but to send you to prison," she told the man.

"Hopefully you will be helped by the prison's sex offender treatment program during your time there."

The man was sentenced to 18 months in jail with release in six months, the remaining 12 months suspended for three years.

Judge Bradley also sentenced the man to two years' probation where he would have to undergo counselling and psychiatric treatment.

The period of probation would begin upon the man's release from prison.
