POLICE are hunting for a man involved in a bizarre shooting incident in the car park at the Park Beach Plaza.
On Wednesday, a 20-year-old was shot in the shoulder after another man demanded he hand over his mobile phone and wallet.
Police and two ambulance crews rushed to the Plaza shortly before 7pm where they found the victim conscious and alert.
He had been found inside the shopping centre by a woman who contacted emergency services.
It’s believed a bullet from a small calibre firearm went straight through his shoulder.
Coffs/Clarence acting crime manager Detective Sergeant Grahame Burke said police were asking anyone who saw suspicious behaviour at the shopping complex or who may know the identity of the offender to come forward.
The man they want to speak to is described as having a dark complexion and dark scruffy hair.
He was wearing dark clothing and a red bandanna at the time.
Anyone who can help should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A spokeswoman for Mid North Coast Local Health Network said the victim was treated on Wednesday night and was discharged from Coffs Harbour Base Hospital this morning.
Steve Gooley, general manager of the Bachrach Naumburger Group which owns the Plaza, said CCTV footage had been handed to police and staff was assisting police with all inquiries.
“In the 12 years I’ve been here, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Mr Gooley said.
“The area has 24-hour, seven-days-a-week security and this was an isolated incident.”
He said the Plaza would be increasing security for the next week as a precautionary measure.
