Man raped women on walking tracks
A man has admitted to raping two women along public walking tracks.
Justin Mathieson on Friday pleaded guilty to six charges, including four of rape.
He was charged after assaulting two women in separate attacks on February 24 and October 20 in 2012.
The 31-year-old did not apply for bail in his Melbourne Magistrates Court appearance on Friday.
Police alleged he attacked a 47-year-old woman as she walked along a footpath in Elwood.
She was walking along a footpath on the canal between Beach Road and Addison Street before being sexually assaulted.
The second attack was of a woman walking along the Bay Trail, also in Elwood.
Police alleged Mathieson dragged the 32-year-old woman off the footpath and into the bushes, where he assaulted her.
He originally faced 25 offences but the remainder were struck out, leaving him with four counts of rape for different acts against the two women, one count of indecent assault and one count of make threat to inflict serious injury.
He will next appear for a plea hearing in the County Court in April.
Police are still investigating whether there are any links to any other similar incidents in the Elwood/Bayside area or the western suburbs.
