"She's in labour!" rams cop, torches own car, steals another

A MAN who told a highway patrol police officer his partner was in labour rammed a police car and fled before torching his own vehicle and stealing another, police have said.

In a statement, police said the man was pulled over by a highway patrol officer on the Pacific Highway just south of Bangalow about 4.30pm Sunday.

The man claimed his heavily-pregnant passenger was having contractions and the officer went back to the patrol car to call for an ambulance.

However, while the officer was making the call, the driver reversed "harshly", slamming into the police car before taking off towards Bangalow.

The officer was not hurt in the incident, but the Hilux did get away - at least until a matching vehicle was discovered a short while later burned out at the Hayters Hill nature reserve at Talofa.

Detectives investigating the incident later discovered a home had been broken into and a blue Suzuki van with NSW registration OLM-003, along with other items, was stolen.

Police are asking  anyone who sees the van to phone 000 immediately. The occupants are not to be approached.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 000 333.
