Dad, kids threatened at gunpoint

A MALLANGANEE father and his children were confronted by a man at gunpoint after a domestic dispute spiralled out of control about 3.15pm on Monday.

Following an initial argument over unpaid rent at their Mallanganee property on the Bruxner Highway near Tabulam, the 50-year-old accused went to his car and retrieved a .303 rifle with live ammunition and returned to the house, where he threatened the father and his two teenage boys.

According to police, the 50-year-old gunman returned to his car where he was confronted by a third man – also thought to live at the property – who had arrived soon after the argument started.

Following a serious physical altercation, the gunman was restrained and police were called.

They arrested the gunman and seized the rifle, plus a large quantity of ammunition.

Following a further search, police seized what was believed to be 22 grams of cannabis.

The man was taken to the Casino police station, where he was charged with intent to commit a serious indictable offence, possession of a prohibited drug, assault and firearm offences. Bail was refused.

Later that evening the man was taken under police guard to the Lismore Base Hospital, where he was treated for injuries sustained before police had arrived at the scene of the incident.

At a bedside hearing yesterday, the man was again refused bail and ordered to appear in the Lismore Local Court tomorrow – provided he is discharged from hospital by then.

He remained in the custody of Corrective Services in the Lismore Base Hospital last night.
