Man on child sex charges in hospital

A MAN charged with sexually assaulting a young girl more than two decades ago is under police guard in Lismore Base Hospital.

The 61-year-old man was arrested at Casino on Monday afternoon for 17 sexual-assault offences allegedly committed in the Sydney area between 1980 and 1988.

During his arrest police also seized five firearms and charged the man with four firearm-related offences.

The man was refused bail and was scheduled to appear in the Lismore Local Court yesterday.

However, he was admitted to hospital earlier in the day, Richmond Local Area Command crime manager Detective In-spector Greg Moore said.

“He has been experiencing some health problems and is currently in Lismore Base Hospital under police guard and we hope he will be discharged in the near future,” Insp Moore said.

“He will either be subject to a bedside hearing by the court or front Lismore Local Court for a bail determination.”

Police will allege the man repeatedly sexually assaulted the female victim over a period of eight years.

Det Insp Moore confirmed the victim, who was a child at the time, was known to the offender.

He said the victim was assisting police with their inquiries.

“The charges are historical in nature and relate to offences committed on a young person in the Sydney area,” he said.

“This arrest follows a protracted investigation by Macquarie Fields detectives.”
