Man molested five daughters

AN elderly Murwillumbah man pleaded guilty in Lismore District Court yesterday to indecently assaulting his five daughters over a 30-year period.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wore a suit, blue shirt and glasses as he stood in the dock and pleaded guilty to the nine sex offences.

Among the pleas of guilty, the man admitted to committing an act of indecency on his daughter between 1971 and 1972 when she was under the age of 16 and on another daughter when she was under the age of 16 between 1981 and 1982 at McGraths Hill, north-west of Sydney.

The most recent offence, when the defendant had sexual intercourse with one of his daughters, occurred in Murwillumbah between 2004 and 2005.

The circumstances were aggravated because his daughter was under his authority, the court heard.

The Crown prosecutor said the five complainants in the case were his natural daughters and they intended to make victim impact statements.

Most, if not all, of the daughters were willing to participate in the court proceedings, the Crown said.

Defence barrister Megan Cusack said the defendant had been seeing a psychiatrist on the Gold Coast about the crimes.

The Murwillumbah resident was first arrested by police in May last year.

He was initially granted bail after his son and wife put up a $5000 surety as part of the defendant's bail conditions.

Judge Black contemplated the defendant's current bail conditions and said although some of the offences were very old, some were quite recent.

The Crown conceded while a full-time custodial sentence for the defendant was inevitable, the Crown was mindful the defendant had been on bail.

Ms Cusack also confirmed the defendant was under no illusion in relation to his inevitable sentence.

The defendant's bail was continued, with an additional condition he report to Murwillumbah Police Station twice a week.

The matter was adjourned until November 29.
