AN AGING phone salesman turned drug runner has been jailed for his part in a major Sunshine Coast trafficking ring.

Gary John Edwards, 58, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court to trafficking and supplying large quantities of the drug known as "ice”.

Edwards, whose foray into the underworld was motivated by money troubles, was linked to a syndicate operating between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

He was arrested after police found bags containing more than 138grams of crystallised amphetamine (about $72,000 worth) during road stop on the Bruce Hwy last year.

A further search of his south Brisbane home uncovered more of the drug, bringing the total amount of pure amphetamine seized during the police investigation to 160grams.

The court heard Edwards' wife and son were unaware of his offending and were shocked to find police at their front door.

He had previously been convicted of Commonwealth offences after transferring funds into a secret bank account in an attempt to avoid paying off a large business debt.

Justice Roslyn Atkinson accepted Edwards had shown "extreme remorse” for his actions but said amphetamine was a "socially evil” drug which drove people to commit horrific crimes and society "must attempt to deter” suppliers.

Edwards was given a total of five years jail. The sentence will be suspended after he has served 16 months.
