A WELL-KNOWN local man is clinging to life in the Gold Coast Hospital after falling off the wall around a Byron Bay hotel.

Joe Cassidy, 25, was trying to get back into the Beach Hotel late on Friday night after being asked to leave.

He tried to climb over a low wall away from the main entrances, but apparently fell and hit his head.

He was found unconscious.

An ambulance was called just after 11.10pm.

Mr Cassidy was taken to hospital in Tweed Heads, but transferred to the Gold Coast Hospital and was yesterday clinging to life with a serious head injury and swelling which could leave him brain-damaged.

The Northern Star understands police are investigating the incident.

When The Northern Star visited the Beach Hotel yesterday, the general manager could not be reached for comment.

Mr Cassidy is well-known in the Byron Bay area.
