Man faces court over alleged people smuggling syndicate

A VICTORIAN man has faced court over his alleged involvement in a major people smuggling syndicate operating from Iraq to Australia.

Mildura man Abbas Allami, 37, was arrested on Thursday following a series of dawn raids and was subsequently charged with aggravated people smuggling.

His arrest follows a major Australian Federal Police investigation spanning several states.

An Australian Federal Police spokesman said an investigation known as Operation Accompany was carried out as part of the ongoing Operation Sovereign Borders Disruption Deterrence Task Group.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton confirmed the arrest but said he would not be making any comment on the issue as the matter was currently before the courts.

Mr Allami appeared briefly in Mildura Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon and made no application for bail.
