Man extradited to Armidale

A MAN has been extradited from Gympie after failing to appear in a New South Wales court on alleged child sex offences almost 31 years ago.

On January 20, 1980, a 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with carnal knowledge following an alleged sexual assault offence upon a 15-year-old girl.

The man was granted bail and the hearing was expected to begin at Armidale Local Court on October 27, 1980.

He failed to appear in court and the judge subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest.

Police from New England local area command recently renewed their investigations to locate the man, including liaising with the Queensland Police Service.

About 8.30pm on Tuesday, October 4, officers attached to the Gympie Criminal Investigation Branch attended a local house where they located the now 58-year-old man.

He was arrested and taken to Gympie watch house in relation to the outstanding warrant.

On Wednesday afternoon, Armidale detectives travelled to Queensland and attended Gympie Magistrates Court where they sought and were granted permission to extradite the man.

The man was subsequently taken to Armidale police station where police executed the warrant for his arrest.

He was refused bail and appeared in Armidale local court yesterday.
