Man exploring Brisbane city tunnels dies in heavy storm

A man who drowned in Brisbane's CBD on Saturday was a kayaker exploring an underground stormwater drain.

Police have confirmed the man and a woman had been paddling through the underground drain network on Saturday when they became trapped after an afternoon storm dumped heavy rain on the city.

The woman survived the ordeal and raised the alarm about 4pm, but it was too late to save her companion.

Police found his body underneath the Eagle Street Pier about 6.30pm.

The man went missing amid heavy rain as a storm hit Brisbane on Saturday afternoon.A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said crews in two inflatable boats searched the tunnel system under the city from about 4.20pm.

The storm saw more than 80 millimetres fall in some parts of south-east Queensland.
