Man charged with murder of two young sisters

VICTORIAN homicide detectives have charged a 35-year-old man with murder following the deaths of two young sisters in an Easter Sunday tragedy in Melbourne.

Police were called to a property in Longmuir Road, Watsonia on Sunday around 2.40pm after the discovery of the children's bodies.

The girls, both aged under 10, were found dead in the house and it is understood the man was known to them.

Victorian Police Assistant Commissioner Andrew Crisp told Sky News Australia the tragedy had touched many.

"This is a tragic set of circumstances that has impacted on the family, and there were a number of family members there at the time," he said.

"It is naturally impacted on friends, neighbours and also on members of the fire brigade, the ambulance services and members of Victoria Police who have attended the scene."

The man has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
