UPDATE: DEBRIS lay scattered along the roadside at the scene of collision that claimed the lives of two tourists.
Mackay police forensic crash investigators inspected the crumpled remains of a Ford Econovan, destroyed in what is believed to be a head-on collision, while, nearby, a B-double was curled in a u-shape.
An English man and a German woman, both aged in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The pair had been travelling south in the van when it and the B-double, which had been travelling north, collided on the Bruce Hwy just north of the Marian-Hampden Rd intersection about 30km north of Mackay.
The collision occurred at a bend in the road about 7.40am.
Mackay Northern Beaches Police Sergeant Gavin Richardson said the driver of the truck was taken to Mackay Base Hospital.
The 53-year-old man received a head injury and is in a stable condition.
A nearby resident, who was a member of the Rural Fire Brigade, made the initial 000 call about the crash.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services North Mackay station officer Ivan Knauer said there had obviously been a "major impact" between the two vehicles.
"It does appear to be (a) head-on (collision)," Mr Knauer said.
The highway was still closed either side of the crash yesterday evening, but a detour was in place via a dirt road on a nearby cane property.
This is the second traffic fatality for the Mackay district for 2015.
Last year there were no road deaths during the same period. However, in 2013 seven people were killed in the first two months, five of whom died in February.
POLICE anticipate the Bruce Hwy will be closed until 4pm today after a fatal traffic crash occurred earlier this morning.
The two-vehicle crash involving a B-Double and Ford Econovan occurred about 7.40pm on the Bruce Hwy just north of the Marian Hampden turn off.
The vehicles collided just near Edmonds Rd.
There are traffic diversions in place.
Department of Transport and Main Roads workers are assisting motorists by directing them to a dirt road that runs parallel to the Bruce Hwy along a cane property.
Traffic is only moving one way at a time along this road, so there are delays.
