Drunken man 'stole bus, bashed cop'

A MAN who allegedly slammed the head of a police officer into a concrete path twice after drunkenly stealing a bus is set to face court.

Bundaberg police Detective Senior Sergeant Joe Hildred said the driver of the Bargara Beach Hotel had left the bus after picking up passengers to take a look at an echidna on the road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

While the driver was out of the bus, the man got behind the wheel and drove the bus down See St, Bargara.

Snr Sgt Hildred said the man returned the bus about five minutes later and the driver told him police had been called.

The man fled on foot and was found by police later on Miller St.

Snr Sgt Hildred said the man struggled with police when they asked him to provide a breath specimen.

“He knocked them to the ground and smashed the police officer’s head twice into the concrete path,” he said.

The man’s blood-alcohol level registered 0.149%.

The 40-year-old has been charged with drink-driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and two charges of assaulting a police officer, and will appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on May 13.
