DATA released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has revealed that 60% of Australian businesses still don't have a web presence.
In the midst of tax season, Google and MYOB are urging tax and accounting consultants to get on the web now, or risk losing the lion's share of business to competitors who are online.
“Since April 1, we've seen a 1000% increase in searches in Google for a range of tax-related keywords,” Google product specialist Kate Conroy said.
“We're now seeing more than 70,000 searches a month that indicate people are looking for accountants and professional financial advice online.
“In Australia only one-third of small businesses have a web presence. The fact is, if you're not on the web and cannot be found your business simply is invisible.
“Having a website is just as important as having a phone or mail address. During this busy industry period, for small and medium tax accountants in particular, it's a big risk they really don't have to take.”
The same data from the ABS revealed that more than 70% of businesses with four people or less don't have a web presence.
Earlier this year Google partnered with MYOB to help SMEs get an online presence with the Getting Aussie Business Online program. This program tries to break down the barriers felt by these businesses who want to get online by making the process quick, easy and free.
EzyAssist, an accounting and financial management business in Goowla, South Australia, is just one of over 16,000 businesses who have signed up since the program's launch in March this year.
“Since registering with Getting Aussie Businesses Online I have noticed an increase of attention to my business. It is allowing me to compete with the bigger, more well-known agencies in my area that have more cash to spend on marketing,” owner Fiona Carver said.
