Aussies who live in small towns happier than cities

IF YOU are a well-exercised, non-smoking single woman with a good job in outback Queensland, chances are you are very happy with your lot in life.

The University of Melbourne has questioned about 17,000 Australians on what makes them happy for its annual Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey.

"Towns smaller than 1000 people and non-urban areas increase life satisfaction the most, closely followed by urban areas outside the major cities," report author Associate Professor Roger Wilkins said.

The survey found people who exercised every day and did not smoke were happier, especially if they were women. Having a good job was another joy-inducing factor.

Men were happiest if they had a partner, and women reported the highest glee factor from the single life-style.

Women living in Queensland reported more satisfaction with their living conditions than any other group in the country.
