Lychee harvest bears fruit at expo
IT’S taken three long months of early mornings, late nights and hard work, but John and Kerry Pool are ready to show off the fruits of their labour.
As the directors of Tomarata Orchard, one of Australia’s largest lychee suppliers, the Pomona couple work non-stop from December to March so they can harvest the fruit while it’s in season.
“The only day off we get is Christmas but it is worth it because we are passionate about lychees and the products we make from them,” Mrs Pool said.
When they are not harvesting, they work with Coast chef Peter Wolfe to create a line of sauces, liqueurs, conserves and hampers.
The products are made using fresh ingredients either grown by them or sourced locally.
“Peter started making some products for us in 2007 and it’s grown to 13 products,” Mrs Pool said.
Now they are looking forward to showcasing their summer of hard work at Brisbane’s ABC Gardening Australia Expo, to be held from Friday to Sunday. They will be taste-testing their line of products, which now includes nectarine chutney, zucchini pickles, peach conserve, rosella jam, orchard honey, peach desert sauce, nectarine desert sauce and peach and sundowner liqueurs.
“There is nothing like our lychee products on the market and when you buy from us, you are supporting an all-Australian product,” Mrs Pool said.
“They have no preservatives and they’re gluten free.”
