THE weary traveller, especially one who must travel in his profession, appreciates the difference a boutique hotel can make to the well-being when on the road.
Spicers Balfour Hotel in New Farm, Brisbane, fits this bill perfectly. It’s more like a luxurious and classic Queensland home than a hotel.
With just nine rooms, its warm intimacy is felt the moment of entry. On our visit in February, fellow guests were a mix of couples and business people.
We saw this the moment after we’d settled into our luxurious room, checked out the Italian bed linen, and popped up to the roof-top bar for martinis and canapés, to find the interesting mix of guests all had the same refreshment needs as us.
Propped up at the bar overlooking the Story Bridge, watching the sun go down and waiting for the bridge to light up made us feel smug and gave us an understanding why frequent travellers quickly become addicted to this place.
It’s like being a privileged guest in a friend’s home. Such an uplifting change from generic hotels.
Spicers Balfour is surrounded by cafes, bistros and restaurants, making dining choices practically limitless.
Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in an elegant cosy space on Balfour’s second level.
The a la carte menu includes all you’d expect (the eggs benedict comes with a basil hollandaise) and something you wouldn’t expect (huevos rancheros: Spanish bean salsa with egg, ciabatta and lemon). Unfortunately, we had a very early departure, but chef made us up a box of pastries and excellent coffee to go.
Spicers Balfour has a generous Mother’s Day package if you’re looking for something different from the usual flowers and chocolates. As well as the luxury accommodation with lush toiletries, Bose sound system, iPod docking station and internet facilities, Mum will receive a one-hour massage or treatment of her choice, high tea, including a glass of champagne, canapés and breakfast.
The package starts from $549 per couple and can be used until May 31. Room rates start at $359 per room per night. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 1300 597 540.
