Local actors are the new sensations in INXS movie
THE spotlight is on Coast talent in Channel 7's new INXS mini-series Never Tear Us Apart.
Two of the big-budget drama's stars are former residents, including Luke Arnold who plays the band's polarising but charismatic lead singer Michael Hutchence.
Arnold lived at Sunshine Beach while he finished Years 11 and 12 and performed with the Noosa Theatre Company.
"That's actually where my acting first kicked off, really, doing theatre in Noosa,"
Arnold told the Daily.
Arnold bears a striking resemblance to Hutchence and admits he was told as much growing up.
"A few people who knew Michael thought there was a resemblance," he said.
"But Michael was such a distinctive guy - the way he moved, talked, sang, the way he was.
"Even though there's some resemblance, I've done a lot of work to catch his essence."
Mountain Creek's Andy Ryan plays INXS keyboardist and main composer Andrew Farriss.
The pair features in one of the show's most iconic scenes, when Ryan is playing the piano as Arnold sings the lines of what would become the iconic song after which the mini-series is named.
Ryan, an ex-Sunshine Coast Grammar School and Matthew Flinders Anglican College student, praised Arnold's portrayal.
"We were just rehearsing one day and Tim Farriss (INXS lead guitarist) said, 'I didn't know whether to direct Luke or give him a hug' because it reminded him so much of having his mate around," Ryan said.
"I reckon the whole country, whoever watches this show, will be blown away by how real Michael is."
The two-part mini-series is one of the most highly anticipated Aussie dramas of the new year.
INXS manager CM Murphy is a co-executive producer and all of the remaining band members signed off on the drama's portrayal of their rise from Aussie pub band to worldwide fame and Hutchence's tragic death.
The mini-series features original recordings and some original clothes worn by the band.
