LNP cancels event with "embarrassing" Tony Abbott

THE Queensland LNP has cancelled a potentially lucrative fundraising event headlined by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott because senior officers were apparently "embarrassed" by him and did not want the ousted leader to attend.

Mr Abbott was due to speak at Brisbane's Greek Club.

News Limited reports the national Liberal campaign director Tony Nutt is now asked pointed questions of his local counterparts.

The saga begins with organiser Mark Chapman being booted from the party last week, after he made claims relating to LNP state boss Michael O'Dwyer.

Mr Chapman had apparently said Mr O'Dwyer did not want the former PM to attend the event.

In a bizarre chain of who said what, Queensland LNP campaign director Lincoln Folo wrote in an email that Mr Chapman said Mr O'Dwyer felt the former PM "was an embarassment and that the function could not proceed on that basis".

Mr Chapman has denied the claims to News Limited.

Mr Chapman is also understood to have emailed Mr Nutt on Monday to say the LNP was reluctant to promote the event because of the link to Mr Abbott.

Officially, the LNP event was cancelled because the fundraiser was expected to lose money.

A spokesman for the former PM told News Limited he has had many requests from the LNP to campaign in Queensland.
