Little Evie's second chance at life as she relearns to walk
IF IT was any other dog, they'd have been put down almost instantly, but little Evie is a fighter.
The eight-month-old American Staffordshire bull terrier was given up by her Morayfield owners, suffering from broken hind legs, fractured skull and ribs on just over a week ago.
Her injuries had been left untreated for so long that she'd learnt to walk on her front legs.
RSPCA inspector Sharni Statham was called to the Kippa-Ring vet on Sunday 22 where they were planning to put the pup down due to her horrific injuries.
"She had so many problems that the RSPCA had to be advised ... I was lucky to come in when I did," Ms Statham said.
"They thought she wouldn't be able to be fixed … but if she was comfortable, we can't put her down.
"Despite her pain, she had so much love and affection. She was wagging her tail and asking to have people love her."
They decided to set up a chuffed.org page and wait until Monday to see how she was fairing and to everyone's surprise, the page had raised the $15,000 needed for surgery within the first five hours of being online.
Doctor Wendy Archipow from Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre cleared her entire schedule last Friday to operate on Evie.
A BVSC spokeswoman said the surgery was a success, following five gruelling hours.
"It's a very big surgery. We need to dedicate the day to Evie," she said.
"Dr Archipow is happy with how the surgery went and was able to fix both fractured legs. It took nearly five hours, but Dr Archipow is very happy with the repair.
"Once Evie is well enough, she will be relocated to the care of the RSPCA veterinarians."
The chuffed.org page has since raised more than $26,000, which will be spent on Evie's rehabilitation as she relearns to walk.
Ms Statham said Evie's owners, who can't be named, were expected to be charged following an investigation.
Morayfield has been second, only to Caboolture, for the number of animal cruelty complaints across Queensland for the past five years.
