BALLINA has already put its hand up and now Lismore is volunteering to become the new home for Splendour in the Grass.

The music festival is temporarily moving to Woodford in Queensland next year after repeated unsuccessful attempts to relocate to a site in Yelgun.

North Coast National Agriculture and Industry Society president John Gibson said he would be approaching Splendour producers to suggest a move to the Lismore Showground.

He said the showground regularly hosted crowds of more than 10,000 people and would easily cope with the 17,500 ticket-holders who attended Splendour in Byron Bay this year.

“Our show brings something like 40,000 people over three days,” Mr Gibson said.

“We also have the Tropical Fruits (New Year’s Eve party) and Lismore Speedway meets that attract big crowds.”

Mr Gibson said if Splendour in the Grass was held in Lismore, places like Byron Bay would still benefit economically.

“It would be good for the whole region,” he said.

“There’s no reason why it shouldn’t be held in Lismore. People could stay on the beaches and catch buses over to Lismore. They could stay in Casino if they wanted.

“It would be better for the region than having it move to Queensland.”

Ballina community leaders have also suggested the Ballina Jockey Club as a possible venue for the festival.

Festival producers have approval to stay at Woodford for two years, but said they hoped to move to Yelgun before that.

Splendour in the Grass general manager Darcy Condon said the local interest was heartening.

“It is great that the Lismore show society is interested in Splendour in the Grass” he said.

“At the very least the Lismore Showground is worthy of further investigation. Lismore is a vibrant and diverse community.”
