Lighthouse a beacon in the dust

The Cape Byron Lighthouse was about the only landmark in Byron Bay that you could clearly see after a ferocious dust storm enveloped New South Wales and south-east Queensland on Wednesday of last week.

People were warned to stay indoors and not to exercise as clouds of red dust choked everything in its path.

The dust had travelled from drought-affected areas of western New South Wales.
