Lexus goes sporty with new RC coupe variant

LEXUS is flexing its athletic muscle with a new RC coupe set to reach Australian showrooms next year.

The luxury car maker today unveiled its production-ready Lexus RC coupe at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The RC raises Lexus' profile with a broader audience, injecting emotional appeal into the Lexus DNA which has become well known for build quality, refinement and reliability.

It is a standalone model, rather than a two-door derivative of a sedan.

Based on the GS platform, the coupe differs in all dimensions from the GS and IS Lines.

Pricing and drivetrains are yet to be confirmed for the Australian market.

Yet, the aggressively styled coupe was revealed with two powertrains: a 3.5-litre V6 teamed with an eight-speed sequential transmission and 2.5-litre hybrid system.

The dual injection 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine produces maximum power of 234kW at 6400rpm, and peak torque of 380Nm at 4800rpm.

An eight-speed Sports Direct Shift with paddle shift transmission adapted from the IS F optimises power delivery and economy. In M (manual) mode full torque converter lock-up from second to eighth gears allows for down changes in just 0.2 seconds.

The hybrid variant - the first Lexus hybrid coupe - uses a dual-injected 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a 105kW electric motor driven through an electronic continuously variable transmission with six step gears in a sequential shift-matic feature.

Depending on market requirement, the RC coupe will drive either through its rear wheels or be available in all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration.

The sound generated by the engine has been tuned to ensure it delivers a stirring note under spirited driving conditions.

Meanwhile, Lexus also unveiled the LF-NX Turbo.

The Lexus LF-NX Turbo concept focuses on the growing segment of smaller, more urban-centric compact premium Crossovers.

More compact than the pioneering RX (at 4640mm long with a 2700mm wheelbase) the LF-NX Turbo concept combines spirited performance with optimum fuel efficiency, while the 2.0-litre engine paves the way for the introduction of turbocharged powerplants in future Lexus models.

The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit combines Lexus' advanced high tumble port, fan spray fuel injection D-4S and VVT-iw combustion technologies with a cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold and a twin scroll turbocharger with an active wastegate valve.

Through optimisation of the exhaust gas temperature, the cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold combines a high level of performance with fuel efficiency and clean exhaust emission reliability, while the twin scroll turbocharger operates effectively across the widest possible rev range.

The LF-NX Turbo's new powerplant targets a fast throttle response and exhilarating performance while demonstrating outstanding fuel efficiency.
