Lewandowski's goals see Poland through to finals

POLAND has sealed its spot at next year's World Cup in Russia thanks to Robert Lewandowksi's double in a 4-2 win over Montnegro.

The Bayern Munich striker now has 16 goals in European qualifying games, one more than Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Poles secured a first World Cup finals place since 2006, while there was joy in Egypt as the African nation sealed its first finals place since 1990 with a 2-1 win over the Republic of Congo.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah converted a stoppage-time penalty, his second goal of the game, to spark huge celebrations.

Germany had already qualified but made it 10 wins from 10 in Group C after routing Azerbaijan 5-1 in Kaiserslautern to join Spain as the only nations in history to finish a European World Cup qualifying campaign with a perfect record.

England is also at the finals and completed its campaign with a 1-0 win in Lithuania.

Skipper Harry Kane scored the only goal from the penalty spot, his 15th goal in 10 games for club and country.

Northern Ireland slid to a 1-0 defeat to Norway in Oslo after an own goal by Chris Brunt, but Michael O'Neill's men were already guaranteed a berth in the playoffs.

Scotland's 2-2 draw in Slovenia saw the Irish through and meant the Scots failed to make the playoffs

Slovakia face an anxious wait to discover whether they will advance to the two-legged playoffs after finishing second behind England in Group F following a comfortable 3-0 win over Malta.
