Lennox man charged with murder

A Lennox Head man, 38, has been charged with the murder of Byron Bay businessman, John ‘Jack’ Garda, 54.

The charged man, Kevin Purtill, of Lennox Head faced Lismore Local Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until April 20.

While not formally identified at the time of going to press, the body of a man found in a shallow grave at Broadwater is believed to be that of the missing man.

Mr Garda operated a sub-newsagency at Sunrise Beach and a 24/7 grocery store in Jonson Street.

He was last seen about four weeks ago, with friends and family describing his disappearance as out of character.
