Adelaide 36ers coach Joey Wright says the quality of the NBL and its imports is back to the high standards of when he led the Brisbane Bullets to the title in 2007.

Wright's Bullets roster included MVP Sam Mackinnon, Mark Bradtke, CJ Bruton, Ebi Ere, Adam Gibson, Dillon Boucher, Dusty Rychart and Mick Hill, and was regarded as one of the best ever assembled after winning a record 21-games straight.

Wright's team takes on Melbourne United tonight after a barnstorming opening win against champion New Zealand last week, before a disappointing loss to Perth at home two nights later.

"The talent is as good as I've seen it in a long time, back to the Brisbane days. Talent-wise the league has definitely stepped up," Wright said.

"If you're a player down, or two players down this year, it's going to mean a lot - that's every team in the league.

"If you don't have your best players and don't play your best, you won't win."

Wright said Adelaide would have to defend Melbourne on the perimeter and then shoot the ball extremely well to win tonight.

In other round two games, Perth hosts New Zealand, which is coming off a bad 96-75 loss to Illawarra in Wollongong on Wednesday night, the Hawks will chase a round-two double against Sydney, while Cairns will host Townsville in a north Queensland derby.
