TWO Northern Rivers students have topped the State in language subjects in this year’s HSC results.

Louise Tate, from Mullumbimby, received a First in Course award yesterday in Sydney for receiving the best marks in NSW for French Beginners as part of her HSC.

The 18-year-old is a Shearwater Steiner School student, but studies French through the Southern Cross School Distant Education Centre.

“The sound of the language attracted me the most, the allure of French culture and, of course, Paris,” she said. “I did not find it very difficult as I learnt Italian when I was younger and that helped me – it came almost naturally.”

Fellow Northern Rivers resident Isolde Daniell received a First in Course award for topping her Italian Extension HSC subject.

The Trinity Catholic College Lismore student beat thousands of students across the State, many who come from Italian-speaking backgrounds.

“I really enjoyed the subject and did well at school, but to get a state-level award is a really big honour,” she said. “It’s a fabulous country and I love the culture, the food and people. I would like to do a year of university study there.”

Isolde also studies French and plans to study Spanish next year.

The scores the two girls received in their subjects were released today at 6am when students statewide were able to see their results via text, phone or internet.

Tomorrow, from 9am, students will be able to access their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, which will give them an idea if they made their chosen uni course.
