OFFSPRING fans better have the tissues at the ready for tonight's season final.

The drama's central character Nina Proudman will face her partner Patrick's funeral while preparing for the imminent birth of their child.

"It's beautiful by the end. You'll cry but you'll also have a bit of a laugh," said Matthew Le Nevez, who plays Patrick.

"There's some great romance and some tenderness. In tonight's last episode is one of the most romantic images in the show's four seasons."

Viewers have had nearly a week to come to terms with Patrick's sudden death, which sent social media into meltdown last week.

Le Nevez, who is leaving the show to pursue acting opportunities in the US, said the outpouring of grief over his character has been overwhelming.

"I expected people to be shocked, but nothing to this extent. It's quite humbling and exciting," he told APN.

"It was fantastic we had our biggest audience of the season when Asher (Keddie) and Kate (Jenkinson) did some of the most phenomenal work. Watching their grief play out on the last 10 minutes of the last episode was just harrowing."

Even Le Nevez's mum is amongst the Patrick mourners.

"Mum wishes Offspring went on forever, but nothing lasts forever," he said.

"I was trying to leave it a surprise but mum came down to the set one day when we were filming. Everyone was a bit quiet as mum was talking about next season. Then she went through my scripts and read the finale."

He quelled viewer concerns the show is heading in a darker direction.

"It does balance light and dark quite well," he said.

"One of the great things about this show is the fact that Nina has such a vivid imagination.

"There are opportunities for some humour there. Like what if (next season) Nina starts dating someone new and Patrick's in the room telling her what to do?"

But he also ruled out any hopes that Patrick's death was part of one long dream sequence.

"No, I wish," he said.

Le Nevez just finished filming the ABC telemovie Parer's War on the Gold Coast on Friday, in which he plays Second World War cameraman and Australia's first Academy Award winner Damien Parer.

"It was a tough shoot, but I'm really excited about the film," he said.

"He was killed when his wife was five months pregnant… it's an incredible story."

Le Nevez flies to the US this weekend to begin auditioning for roles in Los Angeles.

"I've been so busy for the past few years that I'm looking at the States with fresh eyes," he said.

"I'm hoping something pops up.

"I'm going to miss everybody (from Offspring). They're really my family."

The Offspring season four final airs tonight at 8.30pm on Ten.
