Last goodbyes for Sapper Robinson

John Gass

FAMILY and Friends of Sapper Rowan Robinson said their last goodbyes to him at St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Kingscliff today.

His parents Marie and Peter, sister Rachael and brothers Ben and Troy bid a tearful farewell to the man who was remembered as a hero.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott attended the requiem mass service along with members of Sapper Robinson’s unit.

His friends and family spoke fondly of the Kingscliff raised soldier and remembered his strength, courage and roguish smile.

A guard of honor was formed down Pearl St as his body was taken to Melaleuca Station for a cremation ceremony.
The 23-year-old Combat Engineer was killed during a small-arms engagement with insurgents in southern Afghanistan on Monday June 6.

He was part of an Afghan National Police and Special Operations Task Group patrol when they uncovered one of the largest insurgent caches found by Australian Special Forces this year.
