Land sought for cheap housing

Byron Shire land owners who have at least one hectare of reasonably flat land are being encouraged to consider listing their property as a possible site for a caravan park, or manufactured home estate.

Cr Patrick Morrisey, who is behind the move, says that ideally, the land will be close to services, public transport and have enough space for inclusion of a community garden.

Cr Morrisey said well-located, designed and managed caravan parks had the potential to provide affordable housing options.

“The need for medium and long-term affordable housing is a challenging problem facing the shire,” he said.

“Caravan parks and managed home estates have the potential to provide housing for low-income earners and the elderly.”

Cr Morrissey said calling for expressions of interest was the first step in identifying suitable sites and determining the process required to move the project forward.

A list of submitted private land and potential public land will be presented to the council for further consideration.

Expressions of interest must be submitted by May 19.
