Few services to help with autism, so mum starts her own

MELLISSA Smyth found it difficult to obtain services for her seven-year-old son who has autism and selective mutism.

Instead of sitting on her hands, however, the Kyogle mum, with the help of her own mum Molly Smyth, has started up Kyogle Support Group to help bring together other people facing similar difficulties.

"There is a huge need here for people with disabilities and their carers, to find the right information and services," she said.

"Our group wanted to get people together in the same situation and support them.

"It doesn't matter if it's a chronic illness, physical or mental disability or if you are a carer."

Under the auspices of Northcott Disability Services who fund the group, the small gathering meet at Grove House, Geneva St, Kyogle every second Thursday of the month.

"The group is very confidential, so what happens in the group, stays in the group," Mellissa said.

"We are also hoping to set up a group called Centre of Gravity, for children with autism and aspergers syndrome.

"If we have enough children on our register we will be able to get services to come to Kyogle."

Services such as occupational therapy, speech therapy and sibling support groups are desperately needed in the small town, according to Mellissa.

If you would like to register your interest with Centre of Gravity or learn more about the Kyogle Support Group you can contact Mellissa on 0423 658 137, email mellissa_smyth@hotmail.com or call the Northcott office 66206600.
