Knight bounces back from injury to boost Wildcats

BASKETBALL: An earlier-than-expected return for key big man Matt Knight is set to boost defending NBL champions the Perth Wildcats in tonight's home clash with Illawarra.

Coach Trevor Gleeson confirmed Knight, who suffered a subluxation of the shoulder joint in pre-season training, would face the Hawks after it was expected he would miss eight weeks.

Tonight's match will mark Knight's 150th game for the Wildcats and Gleeson was full of praise for what his star man had achieved.

"Matt's done a great job over the last couple of years,” he said.

"When he first got here he got his body right, he's lost weight and got stronger.

"I'm really impressed with his work ethic, he was on the court the other day and he was really good. The guys are full of confidence with him out there.

"We're better with him out on the court.”

In tonight's other clash, the Cairns Taipans will be looking for their first win of the season when they take on the 36ers in Adelaide.

The Taipans are sitting on 0-2 after two rounds and are bottom of the ladder, while Adelaide handed Brisbane its first loss of the season last week with an overtime win.

Tonight: Perth Wildcats v Illawarra Hawks at Perth Arena, 4.30pm; Adelaide 36ers v Cairns Taipans at Titanium Security Arena, 6.30pm (times AEST)
