Kites and bikes on show

EXPECT to see some weird and wonderful bikes at next Sunday’s Kites and Bikes Festival at Brunswick Heads.

Among them will be a modern take on the Penny Farthing, developed by Huon, a Year 10 student at the Shearwater Steiner School.

The art bike project has the goal of adding some whimsy and wonder to the growing world of self-powered transport.

“The bike activities are all about encouraging people to swap the car for a bike,” festival bike co-ordinator Nick Bowden said.

Bring along your decorated bikes, scooters and strollers to The Terrace for the bike parade, or decorate them at the festival.

Throughout the day have a bike safety check, get your bike engraved, sign up for one of the free Aust-cycle bike sessions and be challenged by the skills circuits.

Or check out the vintage bike display. You can also join in one the one-hour family Tour de Bruns at 3pm.

There will be community food and market stalls too, and kite enthusiasts will demonstrate their stunt, stack and fighting kites.

Thrill-seekers will also dem-onstrate their kite buggying, kite boarding and kite surfing skills, depending on the conditions.

If you don’t have a kite to fly you can make and decorate one at the Housie Shed, from 9am-midday, and then join in flying kites of all shapes and sizes along the beach.

The event is in part being sponsored by local bike shops True Wheel Cycles and Byron Bay Bicycles and also Phillip Hood Recycles.

Other entertainment will include the Spaghetti Circus stilt walkers and the Samba Blisstas.

Volunteers are needed on the day. If you can spare some time, call Michelle on 6685 1003. More info: www.kitesandbikes.com.au
