Byron teen surfer Kyuss wins to become king of U16 division
BYRON BAY surfer Kyuss King is one of four new champions following the NRMA NSW Junior State Titles.
The Under-16 and Under-18 divisions were completed in near-perfect four-to-five foot right-handers at Middle Rock Beach, near Port Stephens.
Kyuss perfectly tuned his explosive repertoire with Middle Rock's long right-hand walls, posting a handful of massive scores to narrowly take out the Under-16 boys.
The natural-footed surfer held down the lead for a solid portion of the heat and was overtaken for a short time by Sandon Whittaker (Avoca), who posted a massive 9.17.
But Kyuss clawed back the lead in the final minutes of the final by scoring an 8.1 and taking back the top spot by a 0.03 margin. Joel Paxton (Byron Bay) finished third.
The 2015 Australian Junior Surfing Titles will be held at Stradbroke Island in Queensland from November 28 to December 5.
