A GUNMAN is on the loose after killing a man at a unit block in Sydney's inner west.

About 2:30 last night, emergency crews rushed to Bennett street in Mortlake, where they found the body of a man inside a home.

The man is believed to be 29-years-old and initial reports suggest he was shot in the stomach and chest.

At 3:50am, a female witness, dressed in all black was escorted down to a police cruiser and taken away.

A crime scene has been established and police are investigating possible bikie links to the incident.
