Kelly's swell idea
“IT’S the Tracks mag for under 8s,” is how former world number three professional surfer Danny Wills has described a new children’s surfing book written by Kelly Smith.
Kelly, a physical education teacher from Byron Bay and a member of the Byron Bay Boardriders Club, will launch her new book, Sunny and Coco’s A-Z of Surfing, at the Lennox Head Library on Saturday.
“My new book is not just another typical surfing book for children,” she said.
“It’s a fun and exciting way for kids to learn basic literary skills while delving into the exhilarating world of surfing.
“While the book’s fundamental base is surfing, it also incorporates the environment, health, relationships, culture, safety, imagination, creativity, skill development, self-confidence, resilience and some seriously cool vibes.”
Kelly’s passions are surfing, health and children and while she loves her teaching job, she wanted to do more.
“About three years ago I thought I would like to write a children’s book, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that I actually sat down and did it,” she said.
“It only took a few months and I am thrilled with the result.
“Not only does the book teach kids the alphabet, but there are lots of messages as well.”
Sunny and Coco’s A-Z of Surfing is beautifully illustrated by Leroy Sams of Noosa Heads and was printed in Brisbane.
Each letter represents a surfing term or word, and the text after each letter rhymes.
The book is self-published, but Kelly is hoping to get it into local book stores.
She has also donated a page to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for children to get involved in matters of the environment.
Sea Shepherd Australian director Jeff Hansen said the book was “fun, educational and entertaining”.
“If the book sells well, I may get serious about doing more,” Kelly said.
“I was so passionate and motivated when I wrote it and it was such a great feeling of achievement.”
The book costs $20 and is available from sunnyandcoco.com.au or you can phone Kelly on 0402813958.
The book launch on Saturday will be held at 10am. Each book sold will include a Sea Shepherd sticker and a colouring-in poster.
Not only does the book teach kids the alphabet, but there are lots of messages as well.
